Safe Ride is a free service offered to UCSD undergraduate students to provide a safe ride home for anyone in an uncomfortable or unexpected situation, such as walking home alone after dark or a vehicle breakdown, and to avoid driving after drinking. Here is the official FAQ provided with the service.

What is A.S. Safe Ride?
A.S. Safe Ride is a service of the Associated Students and is designed to provide a safe ride home for all UCSD undergraduate students.

When does A.S. Safe Ride operate?
A.S. Safe Ride runs from 11:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights during the academic year (excluding holidays). All students who call A.S. Safe Ride before 2:30 a.m. are guaranteed a ride home. The deadline of 2:30 a.m. allows A.S. Safe Ride time to pick up and safely transport all students home. The A.S. Safe Ride program only runs during the quarter, not during breaks or in the summer.

What are the areas of service?
The areas of service include: La Jolla, Pacific Beach, Clairemont, University City, Mission Bay, Ocean Beach, Del Mar, Hillcrest, Mira Mesa, San Diego State University, and the Gaslamp Quarter/Downtown. For the Downtown area, A.S. Safe Ride will pickup at the Old Spaghetti Factory on 5th and K Street.

How many times can I use A.S. Safe Ride per quarter?
Each student is limited to three rides home per quarter.

How much does the service cost?
A.S. Safe Ride is FREE for all registered undergraduate UCSD students who have completed and signed the A.S. Safe Ride Waiver (available at Price Center, 3rd floor reception desk).

Do I need to tip?
Tipping is appropriate, expected, and appreciated.

Can one A.S. Safe Ride sticker be used for multiple people?
No, each student must have an A.S. Safe Ride sticker. Students without the sticker will not be permitted to use the service.

Is A.S. Safe Ride just a service for students who have been drinking?
No, A.S. Safe Ride is designed to provide a safe ride home for anyone in an uncomfortable or unexpected situation, such as walking home alone after dark or a vehicle breakdown. Historical data indicates that several participants who used the A.S. Safe Ride service had not consumed any alcohol.

Where can I get an A.S. Safe Ride sticker?
A.S. Safe Ride stickers (and A.S. Safe Ride Waivers) are available at the receptionist desk located on the 3rd floor of the Price Center. You must complete and return the A.S. Safe Ride Waiver to the receptionist desk to receive a sticker.

How do I use A.S. Safe Ride?

  1. Call (619) 564-7998.
  2. Inform the dispatcher that you are a UCSD student calling the A.S. Safe Ride service and your location.
  3. When the taxi (or shuttle bus) arrives, show your valid UCSD identification card with the A.S. Safe Ride sticker.
