Thanksgiving Day

Thanksgiving is a long 4-day weekend in which American and Canadian families celebrate together and take a break from school and from work.

This short holiday starts on the fourth Thursday of November (November 22nd in 2007) and lasts until Sunday, even if most of the celebration takes place on Thursday.

Thanksgiving is characterized by some traditional recipes (that is, almost the only American traditional recipes):

  • first of all, turkey
  • mashed potatoes with gravy
  • sweet potatoes
  • cranberry sauce
  • corn
  • pumpkin pie
  • etc…

It is quite common that in Thanksgiving day all the guests contribute to the meal, for example cooking together (here are some recipes) or bringing the food from home, that is making a potluck dinner.

Another big event related with Thanksgiving Day is the beginning of the new shopping season. For this reason the Friday after Thanksgiving Day is called Black Friday and it's the day of the year in which you can find the best deals! Moreover, on the Monday after Thanksgiving, Cyber Monday, the same happens for online shops!
